I talked about this wine when I posted my recipe for pan seared duck breasts. I liked the bottle I drank so much that night that I ordered a case from Wine.com. Sometimes, the memory of a wine is a bit romanticized when you have enjoyed it on a perfect evening with a perfect meal, so I was prepared for disappointment. The reality? This wine was just as wonderful when I opened the second bottle and drank it with a Sloppy Josephine (recipe on site). It was silky and red-fruity and a bit minty. The tannins were smooth and understated. This is the kind of Cab I love, drinkable, compatible with food, flowery. Having said that, here’s what Wine Spectator said: Aromas of black fruits, peppermint, bark and dried herbs. Full body with plush tannins. Fruity and chocolatey with fresh acidity and a lively finish. And here’s what the Tasting Panel on Wine.com said:
Aged in French and American oak, this dynamic blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec offers up scents of huckleberry, dried herbs, and vanilla. An incredibly silky entry of ripe blueberry preserves captivates with a luxurious mouthfeel. The textural sensations continue with melting dark chocolate, graphite, and a coat of anise.
And, by the way, I drank this wine while I watched Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958) which was a hoot. Who doesn’t see the feminist agenda in this movie? Wikipedia describes the plot as follows: The film’s storyline concerns the plight of a wealthy heiress whose close encounter with an enormous alien in his round spacecraft causes her to grow into a giantess, complicating her marriage which is already troubled by a philandering husband. Let me just add that this unfortunate heiress was also being gas-lit by her jerk of a hubby and marginalized by pretty much everyone she encountered due to perceived hysteria and psychiatric issues. What she needed was a good divorce lawyer. What she got was a dose of some sort of alien growth hormone that turned her into a very angry giant. Do we not see the metaphor in this story? Well, I won’t belabor it but suffice it to say that my Friday Night Fright night was totally fun with Sloppy Josephines on the side and this gorgeous Peju Cab.
